Hey! I looked through all the videos. Here's a short summary:

The video tells the story of Kev Coleman, a wheelchair-using grad student at Northern Illinois University, showcasing how making theater tech accessible through innovative solutions benefits everyone while challenging traditional assumptions about disabilities in the entertainment industry.

Here are the key topics:

  1. Accessibility in theater and entertainment technology

  2. NIU's adaptations for wheelchair accessibility

  3. Innovation in lighting control systems

  4. Importance of including disabled voices in accessibility discussions

  5. Breaking barriers in technical theater roles

  6. Universal design benefits for all users

Let me know if you'd like me to search for specific content around any of these topics!

Are there some specific topics you want me to focus on? I'll whip up a draft and we can work together from there.

Explore topic 1

Here are the key points about accessibility in theater and entertainment technology:

  1. Core Philosophy: Accessibility drives innovation and creates better products for everyone. Features like curb cuts, keyboards, and automatic doors started as accessibility solutions but now benefit all users.

  2. Industry Challenges: Traditional beliefs often question why disabled individuals would want certain technical roles (like a color-blind lighting designer or wheelchair-using shop tech), creating self-fulfilling barriers.

  3. Design Approach: When accessibility is considered proactively at the start of projects rather than as an afterthought, it leads to better solutions and easier future adaptations.

  4. Community Focus: The theater industry values diversity and storytelling from different perspectives, making it stronger through inclusive practices.

  5. Innovation Principle: Following the motto "nothing about us without us" - involving disabled people directly in conversations about accessibility solutions.

If you use a wheelchair, why would you wanna be a shop tech?

9:02 - 9:06

If you use a wheelchair, why would you wanna be a shop tech?

30:46 - 31:28

So being able to put all of my stuff in, um, as close to me as possible so that way I'm not reaching across the table because my reach is limited due to the fact that I am in the wheelchair that I'm in, but also I'm I'm secured in so if I go over over something or if I go down the steep hill, I'm not falling out. Um, and so, yeah, I guess, for for me, the touch screens have been a huge lifesaver as part of my programming.

31:29 - 31:43

Um, and as I go forward, I am am still manipulating how do I want to use the touch screens slash all of the different options that I have to configure out.

34:23 - 34:37

I can't just sidestep over these, you know, as technology advances, maybe, yes, I will someday get to use advances, maybe, yes, I will someday get to use tech uh, you know, a wheelchair that actually can go side to side, but that is not in the case at current.

10:12 - 10:16

We've seen scenery and prop artists build ramps for wheelchairs.

The transcript shows mentions of wheelchairs in context of:

  1. Challenging stereotypes about career limitations

  2. Technical adaptations and accessibility solutions

  3. Physical modifications to theater spaces

  4. Future technological possibilities

Want me to focus on any particular aspect of these mentions?

Let me know if you want to see any changes. We can keep iterating together.

Accessibility is innovation. When we design products with accessibility as a priority, we design products that become better, more convenient, and more efficient for everyone. A lot of accessible design might be driven by disability access, but if you've ever appreciated curb cuts or computer keyboards, speech to text, smart home technology, automatic doors, you've benefited from accessible design.

3:33 - 3:52

It's our job, the industry's job, to create the tools so that anyone out there can try and discover and create by removing the obstacles that we have unintentionally built into our systems and by developing accommodations we may not have considered in the past.

49:55 - 50:24

Well, once I first started working with Kev, um, just like I do with anybody who's differently abled, um, I rely on my engineering background to assess the person and their ability to interface with the equipment and the spaces that they need to interface with so that I can connect their brain, which is the important part, with their equipment and their surroundings.

5:43 - 5:56

More and more people are becoming involved and supportive of accessibility initiatives. Instead of questioning if accessibility will happen at all, our teams are questioning, how can we make it happen?

In having these conversations, ETC and and the people at ETC have repeatedly come back to this phrase, nothing about us without us. It's a phrase we we first heard from disability advocates in our industry and we decided we really needed to take that seriously. So in order to do that, we need to start showing that ETC is ready to have these conversations. We know there's a lot of work to be done and we're not gonna do everything perfect right off the bat, but we as an industry need to show that we want feedback. And when we do get it, we're welcoming it. We wanna start that initial dialogue. If somebody needs support, we need them to feel comfortable and safe coming to us and asking for it. We need to demonstrate that when you tell us what we can do better, we're ready to listen. Recently, ETC has published a diversity, equity, and inclusion statement that includes accessibility as a focus, and this work is part of that initiative. I've been ETC's UX designer for a number of years now, and I can tell you firsthand progress is being made. The difference between the conversations I was having 5 years ago and the conversations I'm having now today, it's it's like night and day. More and more people are becoming involved and supportive of accessibility initiatives. Instead of questioning if accessibility will happen at all, our teams are questioning, how can we make it happen?

Before Kev was really thinking about lighting design grad school, I got a message from one of his former professors asking if he could succeed in a program like this, if he could succeed in, um, in the entertainment industry as a lighting designer. Uh, Kev had already been accepted into the, uh, education program here at NIU, and so I reached out to him.

17:30 - 18:18

I think that one of the things that one of the things that kept Kev from applying for a position in the program that he was actually interested in was that he'd been told no his whole life. And there's really no reason in a in a field like lighting design where you're basically a computer programmer that his chair or his other, um, limitations, for lack of a better word, there's no reason that any of that should affect the work that he can do on stage. And so it seemed to to me to be a no brainer. I mean, he had the passion for it. He was really, really excited about it. It was obviously a difficult decision for him to make, um, because the education seemed like the much the much safer path in it, you know, for his own education.

23:14 - 23:56

I kinda came in here with an open expectation. I don't know if I really had any idea because this wasn't what I intended. This wasn't my original plan until, uh, as Brandon mentioned, a previous student that or a previous grad student from multiple years ago, um, literally said to me on the stage of our of our of my, not our, of my undergraduate, said, can you see that light up there? And I said, well, of course. He said, can you tell someone to focus that on you? I said, well, yes. He said, great. You can be a lighting designer.

24:21 - 25:02

So, um, I was, like, well, this seems like fun, but I I have a degree in or or a main focus in stage management directing. I know nothing of what I'm doing as a designer. So understanding that there was gonna be, you know, remedial, if I can say the word correctly, uh, you know, learning that has had to happen, um, and then understanding the artistic part of this, uh, was was, you know, I knew there's gonna be a huge learning curve, but I I was excited to take that on and I think I handled it pretty well.

One of the things that became really clear the first time we sat in front of a light board and not something that I had ever paid attention to is that I use both of my hands all the time at the lightboard and so I'm always typing with my left hand. I'm always using the mouse with my right hand and that's just not an option for Kev.

So we we came into this theater and Kevin told so we come into the theater and Kevin said this is really set up like the other theaters I've worked in and they would put me at a tech table up against the wall, which is just a terrible place for a lighting designer to work from. And so, you know, the the theater that I worked out of in undergrad had a center row. And so my immediate thought was maybe there's a way that we can make a center row because we always put the tech tables here. Right? Like this is this is where they go. And we know that our booth is inaccessible, but this room is accessible. And so I think it was basically one email to Tracy saying we have the student looking to come to come here and join our program. Is there a way to get a center row? And his immediate response was, yeah. We'll just pull out the chairs.

So we specifically started using digital pre visualization programs that we could use in concert with EOS on the same computer. And so, um, using programs like Augment3d and like Captur, Kev has really been able to to work on paper projects and to use those programs to he's been really successful at using those programs to pre visualize his own designs, and I can see when we get into the tech process the, um, the benefit that that has had for him.

Mhmm. Well, specific accommodations that we made for Kev, um, in the O'Connell Theatre, uh, which is a proscenium space that was built in the 19 fifties. So it really people back then weren't thinking about human beings on wheels so much. So, uh, one of the things we had to do in there was remove a row of seats to allow the width of his wheelchair to get into the position, and his his skill is a lighting designer. So we had to get the brain of a lighting designer to the middle of the theater where the lighting designer needs to sit.

So this allowed me to say to the campus, the people on campus, and actually point to this one student and say, I have a student on wheels who needs that parking space and that door, and he needs to be able to open that door by pressing a button. Um, it it probably won't come as any surprise that not all of my students are incredibly gifted in the use of graphic media and that the, um, the quality of their renderings varies widely. And so what I do now in my undergraduate lighting design course is I have one project that requires, um, drawn light renderings, just one project, and after that we go immediately to a pre visualizer and we work immediately with the light board. And the finale, like the the final project of that class is designing a student run dance concert, and so all of the students have the ability or have the opportunity to learn on the whiteboard doing a paper project.

Incorporating the solutions that we learned through trying through accommodating Kev in the graduate courses, um, directly affected the undergraduate courses in that we can now get more projects done in 1 semester because we have everything we need already for the undergraduates to really hit the ground hit the ground running. And, um, and we have templates for dance concerts and we have pre visualize templates and we have all of our theaters built in 3 d and we have all of the digital stuff that we need to, um, to let everybody in the program sort of work in the same fashion.

Um, because one of the things about making an interface, for instance, since we're talking about Kev, making an interface that supports Kev's interfacing with the ETC equipment will make it equally as easy for people who can use all 5 fingers on their hand and their hands and their arms in a normal way. Right? And it's not just that we're making this special accommodation for Kev because all of his fingers don't work right.

1:11:16 - 1:11:23

How is that going to affect a person whose fingers do work right? And I bet you're gonna find that that's gonna be embraced by the industry as well.

What I'm noticing these days is that there that we're including the people who are affected by the results of these conversations in the actual conversations, which is definitely the way to go. Right? Um, using a theater comparison, it's like the director and the lighting designer and the costume designer all getting together and having a conversation about scenic design without the scenic designer in the room. Right? Let's bring the scenic designer in the room. So let's bring the people who are going to benefit from the results of these conversations. Let's get them in the conversations, find out what they need, what they want, how we can best accommodate them.

I cannot describe how thankful we at ETC are for Kev's openness and transparency and willingness to work with us. As a member of the neurodivergent community, I'm familiar with the amount of vulnerability it takes to share these deeply personal aspects of yourself with others, especially in a room full of engineers and project managers and researchers. It would be disingenuous of me to not credit him for the impact he's made, but that doesn't mean we're done. It doesn't just end with 1 or 5 or 10 people. The progress is continuous.

Accessibility, contrary to what people might think, doesn't hold us back. It helps us make better, more intuitive products for every user. To expand on that, if accessibility is considered proactively at the beginning of a project rather than at the end, it makes it easier to implement other reactive solutions in the future. Both are necessary.

Our industry has always been one that's made stronger by embracing diversity. At its core, theater is about telling stories, and a story only becomes richer by including more and more voices, by seeing from different perspectives.

Part of working with Kev included exploring accessible input technologies and how they could work with our EOS consoles. We looked at a variety of game controllers and found that a lot of them integrate really well and provide a lot of flexibility to users who might want or need a different type of control. Some of the devices we tested included out of the box joysticks from Logitech and PI Engineering, as well as different keyboard layouts and track balls that some folks might already use with their desktops. We also explored some options that are specifically targeted towards accessibility. These include the Xbox adaptive controller, the PlayStation access controller, and the quad stick.

Since these were built with accessibility in mind, they provide some incredible opportunities for a wide variety of user needs.

While all of the devices I mentioned can be used with Eos in some capacity today, one of our goals involves providing more straightforward documentation to help users get these devices up and running on their own systems.

I would say pretty well, um, since they're here, but, uh, no. I think, you know, it through lots of conversations, emails, and visits up to the up up to ETC, um, is there's there's a lot to go, but there's going to be a lot to go for a long time. Um, and we're just starting that train. We're getting that train out of the station. And, um, at some point, who knows when, we will find solutions that can go out to out to the rest of the world.

Accessibility is innovation. When we design products with accessibility as a priority, we design products that become better, more convenient, and more efficient for everyone. A lot of accessible design might be driven by disability access, but if you've ever appreciated curb cuts, computer keyboards, speech to text, smart home technology, automatic doors, you've benefited from accessible design. Accessibility doesn't hold us back. No. It helps us make better, more intuitive products for every single user.

Want me to explore any specific aspect of these technological developments in more detail?

Um, in terms of classroom work, you know, terms of classroom work, a lot of MFA programs focus on graphic drawing skills. Right? So it's not only text analysis. It's not only learning how to read a play, doing research, etcetera. There's a lot of drawing involved, and ours is no is no exception.

the person who made kev pump his own gas: is there an introduction for him?

Um, I will say that Kev's background from we lit taught all the way up to now has been, um, it's been a tough journey for him. So consequently, as he's grown up, he's gotten he's gotten well rounded in some areas, but there's a few areas where he really hasn't had that world experience. Okay?

1:07:42 - 1:08:22

You know, a couple of instances, one time I was with him in his car and he needed gas. He said, can you come with me and fill my car up with gas? I was like, no. It's your car. You fill your car up with gas. And he said, well, I've never done it by myself. He's 24 years old, and he's never had his car filled up with gas by himself. And I was like, alright. I'm gonna come with you and show you how this is done. And now from now on, you're gonna fill your own up your own car up with gas. Not that he's out accessing the pumps, but how does a disabled person integrate with a service station to get gas in their vehicle? It's some it's just something that was missed in his life thus far.

He continues to explain his broader approach:

So anyway, Kevin and I have a love love relationship. You know. I've I've helped him hopefully helped him grow as a person, and as well as grow as a, uh, as a member of the entertainment community. Right? Because both of those to me are equally as important as each other.

1:09:50 - 1:10:06

Just to get him out there, get him in the world functioning as an independent human. Right? That's a large part of what I do. I leave the lighting design and all that interfacing and that artsy stuff to Brandon, and I take on more of the more of that sort of role.

Again, um, I've been here 25 years. And in those 25 years, we've had people of all kinds come through. We've had people who have had limited sight, limited hearing, um, inability to walk in a straight line, like there's all kinds of like, everybody's got a little bit of difference. Right? So when Kev's disabilities were brought to me, again, it was just another, okay. Well, we'll deal with it. It's it's it wasn't a huge mile milestone in my day. It was just like another okay. That's fine. We'll deal with it. It was and and that's how we like to treat all of our students regardless of what they bring to the table. Right?

Right? So with Kevin particular, okay. We've got a guy who relies on wheels. That's that was sort of my first thing. It's like, okay. We've got a guy who relies on wheels. How can we get him to the places he needs to get to with wheels? Right? So, uh, at that point, we just make some small accommodations here and there. And, again, for me, they weren't anything huge, uh, but it's something that we are blessed here at NIU with being able to do in house. So, you know, if I need a little ramp built, we can just go into our shop and build a little ramp. I don't have to go through 5 miles of red tape in order to get somebody who's qualified to build a ramp. We're perfectly qualified to build a ramp, um, to get him from a to b. Does that make sense?

So I came to meet Kev. He was actually a student of an alum of our program who's also a close friend of mine, uh, and he recommended that Kev come down here and join our MFA lighting design program. So I actually we'd talked a little bit about Kev coming down, and we had discussed, like, we're gonna have to figure out what we're going to do to get things going. But the first time I actually met Kev was, I believe, the day we were rolling around, um, just looking at venues. We set up an appointment to, basically, myself, Tracy, and Brandon, um, to kind of walk around and go into the different venues and figure out what kinds of things we would need to make happen to assist Kev in his journey here at NIU and make sure that he could access what he needed to and do what he needed to do to be a lighting design student.

2:08:47 - 2:09:11

Yeah. Absolutely. When we did that initial walk through, we found, of course, that in our O'Connell theater, which is our proscenium style house with continental seating, that there was no way that Kev was gonna be able to do lighting design from the middle of the house, which is where we typically have the lighting designer sit when we're attacking a show. So we very quickly came to the realization that we're gonna need to pull a row of seats out so that we could get him in there.

2:20:42 - 2:21:09

Um, that that does bring a yeah. So because because of some of Kev's limitations, there's some stuff that he's not able to do like other students. Like, hanging a light is kinda difficult for him because it doesn't have the the strength to get the light up while he's sitting in his chair. Um, but I remember one of the first lighting calls that Kev was at. We had some lights. We were hanging lights and he was kinda hanging out and watching because he knows the stuff.

2:22:21 - 2:22:21

Right?

2:21:10 - 2:21:20

He knows the knows about the lights, knows about the material. So he was coaching some of the students through some of what they were doing because we've got these young students that some of these, you know, some of these students haven't hung or touched a light.

We've complied with ADA in our building, and there's been other things that we've tried to make it a little bit more accessible. But I think as a whole, if we can make it ETC everywhere for everyone, I think it just it makes us even more human than we already are.

We're we're the nice guys in Wisconsin, but if we go that extra step for accessibility and make that something we think about, designing our products and designing our buildings, that really makes us even more of the nicer guys in Wisconsin.

2:30:30 - 2:30:48

So, um, ETC everywhere is one of the slogans. We know we try to we wanna see ETC products everywhere. Right? And so if we expand that and we say ETC everywhere for everyone. Right? We wanna make this for everybody. We don't wanna exclude anybody from the magic of theater.

So for other, you know, product developers or product designers in the industry, I think we can, you know, just talk to the people who want to use our equipment, um, and see what their needs are. What, you know, what accommodations do they already make for themselves? What accommodations would they want us to make? Or what problems do they have? You know, that's another thing. As a product developer, it's not our job to it's our job it's their job to identify the problem, but then it's our our job to solve it. We should not be relying on them to solve those problems.

I mean, I think they're great. I think so the the folks at NIU who are working with Kev, um, and really, um, lifting Kev up and helping him become, you know, looking at him as a lighting designer first. And, like, what accommodations can they make for him so that he can be the best lighting designer he can be. Right?

2:32:37 - 2:33:05

Um, I think they're they're going at it the right way and and fighting for Kev, um, in making accommodations, you know, moving the disabled parking spaces so that they're more they're closer to the main entrance of the building, making sure that the doors are all working, um, or the automated doors are working. So I think seeing that is awesome, um, to see a group of people supporting him so much and really, um, letting him grow.

So as nondisabled folk, um, you know, we can help support our disabled coworkers and, um, fellow theater makers, um, by, you know, making products that make their day their jobs easier.

2:35:05 - 2:35:16

Again, theater is for everybody. Right? And so we should be opening our arms and helping advocate for them and supporting them to be the best that they can be.

Want me to explore any specific aspect of her product development philosophy in more detail?

what would be a good story arc to make this a documentary?

Based on the available content, here's a compelling documentary story arc:

Act 1: "Being Told No"

  • Open with Kev's personal story of being pushed away from theater

  • Show how he was initially directed toward "safer" career paths

  • Highlight the moment someone first told him he could be a lighting designer

Act 2: "Opening Doors"

  • Show NIU's immediate willingness to say "yes"

  • Feature the practical changes made to accommodate Kev

  • Showcase the team that came together to support him:

  • Brandon adapting teaching methods

  • Chris providing technical support

  • Tracy helping with life skills and industry connections

Act 3: "Innovation Through Inclusion"

  • Demonstrate how accommodations for Kev improved the program for everyone

  • Show ETC's involvement and evolution

  • Feature Rebecca's perspective on product development

  • Highlight the "Nothing About Us Without Us" philosophy

Closing: "The Ripple Effect"

  • Show how this story is changing industry perspectives

  • Demonstrate the broader impact on theater accessibility

  • End with the message that accessibility drives innovation for everyone

Let me know if you'd like me to search for specific quotes to support any part of this structure!
